 History of our Funeral Home
Our firm will soon celebrate 100 years of dedicated service to the community and to the Nation.
Our story begins in 1924 when Charles and Percy Hulse formed their partnership, Hulse Brothers. In 1933, Charlie Hulse invited Keith Playfair to join him as a partner. The two quite opposite personalities complimented one another and within a few years, the firm's name changed from Hulse Brothers to Hulse & Playfair. In 1938-39, the new partnership made a bold move by building Ottawa's first funeral chapel at its McLeod Street location. The firm grew rapidly to become Ottawa's largest locally owned and operated funeral business. Today the funeral home is owned and operated by Sharon McGarry and Patrick McGarry.
We believe that our greatest strength and most valuable asset is our team of dedicated licensed funeral directors and experienced support staff. We are proud of the contribution the members of our team make to their local communities and their professional associations.
Our role in our community is to offer our services to alleviate the stress of our client families at a very difficult time of life.

Hulse, Playfair & McGarry is committed to treating all people in a way that allows them to maintain their dignity and independence. We believe in integration and equal opportunity. We are committed to meeting the needs of people with disabilities in a timely manner, and will do so by preventing and removing barriers to accessibility and meeting accessibility requirements under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
