Dorothy Elaine Hopkins (Johnston)
(nee Johnston)

Died peacefully at the Central West Hospice on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at age 74. Elaine was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, educator, musician and independent school lobbyist. She was born May 9, 1940 near Iroquois, Ontario, moving to Ottawa at the age of 17 to teach elementary school. She later received a Bachelor of Mathematics from Carleton University and taught at Laurentian High School. After raising three children, she returned to teaching and from the mid-70s to mid-80s, taught music and the recorder to hundreds of children in Ottawa. Following a turn as Principal of Ottawa’s Montessori School, she started Bishop Hamilton School, a Christian-based Montessori school where she served as Principal until her retirement in 2004. She was also Vice-President of the Ontario Federation of Independent School (OFIS) and the first woman Chair of the Operating Committee of Red Pine Camp.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Bert; her children Paul (Christine), Matthew (Jennifer), and Michael; her grandchildren, Juliet, Ruby, and Benjamin; and her sisters Marilyn deZeeuw (Piet), Shirley Alguire (Owen) and Flora Jean McIntosh (Brian).

A Memorial Service will be held at Bishop Hamilton School, 2199 Regency Terrace, Ottawa, Ontario, on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at 2 p.m.

Donations may be made in Elaine’s name to The Hospice Care Ottawa.
