Obituary for Israel Shinder

We are sad to announce the passing of Israel Shinder on September 24th 2014, at Hillel Lodge in Ottawa, at the age of 95. Israel was the beloved father of Linda Harris (Roy), Eilleen Tackaberry (John), Jack Shinder (Yaffa Greenbaum) and Ruth Baron (Andrew); dear father-in-law of Wendy Klein (Jack) and Gary Newton (Jean Wang); brother of Bernard Shinder (Adele). Israel was predeceased by his parents Jack and Nechama Shinder as well as his sisters Gert Goldstein (Jack) and Ethyl Lightstone (Manny). Israel was blessed with the love and companionship of his two wives who predeceased him: Jennie (nee Greenberg) who died in 1991 and Maureen Newton (nee Gershon) who died in 2005. He will be greatly missed by his much loved fourteen grandchildren, one great grandson, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Israel arrived in Canada as a child in the shadow of the Russian Revolution. His family settled first in Montreal, then in Ottawa, and struggled through the Depression. Israel served with the RCAF in Canada during the war years and helped manage the Canadian-based portion of the Commonwealth Air Training Program. He married in 1943 and after the sudden death of his father in 1945 he assumed responsibility for the family-owned clothing store Royal Furnishings on Rideau Street. In 1955, he and his brother-in-law Manny Lightstone established Ambassador Sales, providing garage doors and commercial construction products to the Ottawa market. In 1969 the focus of the business changed to manufacturing and became AMBICO Limited. The firm continues as a family-owned, successful enterprise inspired by Israel's integrity, vision and commitment to excellence. Israel was devoted to his synagogue, the Agudath Israel Congregation. He served as its President and contributed generously to many Ottawa Jewish Community activities. A proud Canadian, Israel's leadership, intelligence, sense of humour and unwavering commitment to family, friends, employees and community will be greatly missed. A Funeral Service will be held at the Agudath Israel Synagogue, 1400 Coldrey Avenue, Sunday September 28th at 11:00 am, followed by interment at Jewish Memorial Gardens, 2692 Bank Street. Evening services and Shiva (after 2:00 PM) will be held at 142 Powell Ave in the Glebe. Shiva will end the morning of October 3rd. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation, Israel and Jennie Shinder Endowment Fund, 21 Nadolny Sachs Private, Ottawa, Ontario K2A 1R9 (613-798-4696 ext 224) or online at www.ojcf.ca.
