Obituary for George Franklin MacKellar

MacKellar, George Franklin (RCAF Ret.)
1932 – 2014

Peacefully, at the age of 82, at the Ottawa General Hospital on Sept. 25, 2014.
George was predeceased by his beloved wife Margaret (nee Church), by his brothers Richard (Dick), Allen and Monty and by his sister, Mary.

A proud New Brunswicker, George served in the RCAF in Canada and Germany for 27 years. He was an accomplished athlete in several sports including badminton (Armed Forces champion), skiing and tennis. He also claimed expertise in billiards and beer-making but there is some dispute in this regard.

George will be greatly missed by his friends in Ottawa, across Canada and around the world. He will be particularly missed by his many friends at the Ottawa New Edinburg Club where he played tennis for almost 40 years and where he worked tirelessly as a volunteer, maintaining his beloved red clay courts, welcoming new members and mentoring aspiring tennis players and the students who worked on the courts.

Many thanks to the caregivers at Nurse Next Door and to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Ottawa General Hospital’s Emergency Care and 5th Floor North East.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ottawa General Hospital or the charity of your choice. At George’s request, there will be no formal service. Friends are invited to visit at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry 1200 Ogilvie road (at Aviation Parkway) on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from 7 to 9 p.m.
