Obituary for Dorothy Isabel Macaulay Black (Black)

Teacher, traveller and amateur photographer, Dorothy I.M. Black died peacefully in her home in the early hours of April 12, 2015 two weeks short of her 101st birthday. Dorothy taught for many years at the High School of Commerce in Ottawa in the 1960’s and 70’s. The Ontario Secondary School Teacher’s Federation presented Dorothy the first ever Smeaton-Muir Award recognizing her contribution to the teaching profession in Ottawa in 1979. She was a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women for over 50 years. As an avid traveller Dorothy, visited every continent in the world, and had travelled around the world twice. Fiercely independent, Dorothy lived on her own in her Clearview Avenue apartment since 1967. She will be buried in Toronto with her parents at Park Lawn Cemetery, 2845 Bloor Street West, on Monday, April 20th at 1 p.m. According to her wishes there will be no formal ceremony. In lieu of flowers her family suggests making a contribution in her name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
