Obituary for Gertrude Victoria Barber (Earle)

Gertrude Victoria Barber (Earle)
née Earle

Daughter of Charles A. and Ethel J. (Hutchins) Earle, loving and cherished wife of the late Philip George (Bud) Barber. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick on July 1, 1920, died April 13, 2015 at the Ottawa General Hospital. Survived by her son, Philip (Judy Cook), and daughter, Heather Baltazar (Mario), goddaughter Anne Miller and family, special niece, Linda Barber (Peter Verney), as well as many other nieces, nephews and friends. Her seven grandchildren, Allison Barber (Craig O'Connor), Mark Barber, Daniel Barber, Tanya Barber (Mark Donaghy), Christina (John), Jonathan Baltazar (Stephanie Knight), Elizabeth Baltazar (Richard Eckhardt) and nine great- grandchildren all mourn her passing.

"Gertie" as she was called by her family was raised in both New Brunswick and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. While living in Dartmouth in 1940 she met her husband-to-be at a church dance and thus began the courtship and the long loving marriage of Bud and Dee. They had many wonderful years living in Nova Scotia, Alberta, Ontario and France while Bud served in the RCAF. Dee enjoyed immensely travelling throughout Europe, a Fodor's guidebook always handy, while she endeavored to educate the rest of the family on the culture and history of all the places visited. However, it was Ottawa that they decided to reside permanently after returning to Canada. Their home was open to all, with many good times fondly remembered. Dee and Bud’s retirement years were spent visiting family and friends far and wide, with many summers spent in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. Dee lived the last seven years at the Lord Lansdowne Retirement Residence finally having her wish to reside in the Glebe.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all at the Lord Lansdowne for their loving care and kindness during her final years. We would also like to thank her doctors, nurses and staff at The Ottawa Hospital for their thoughtfulness and constant compassionate care for so many years.

Friends and family are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) on Saturday, May 16, 2015 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cancer Research Society, The Ottawa Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice.
