Obituary for Marguerite Louise McDonald (McDonald)
In Ottawa, Monday, August 24, 2015. Born Dec. 18, 1941, near Aubigny, Manitoba, Marguerite graduated as a Gold Medalist from St. Paul’s College, at the University of Manitoba. She became a teaching Sister of the Holy Names for several years before leaving the convent and beginning a career in the media in news, features and current affairs. Among many accomplishments, she was the first host of CBC Radio’s weekly parliamentary affairs program, “The House”, and one of the first women to become a network reporter for CBC TV’s “The National”. After retirement, she took an M.A. in counselling and worked in federal Employee Assistance Programs.
Marguerite is survived by her devoted husband William (Bill) Young, her brother, John, sisters-in-law Valerie McDonald, Claire Elton and Anita McDonald; step-children: Elizabeth, Kathryn and Christine Elton and Victoria Green, and by Laura and John Young; grand-children, Lucy, Ian and Angus Mortimer, Keren and Sarah Elton, Annie Hohenadel, Liam Young, and Sarah and Tea Dukic-Young; nieces and nephews: Edie, John, Gary, Bob and Karen McDonald, Kathy Ball and Audrey Watterson.
Marguerite was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Florence (Wilkinson) McDonald, her brother Allan, and her first husband, Harry Elton.
Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa Thurs from 3 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 pm on Friday, August 28, 2015 at St.Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, 212 Old Chelsea Rd. Chelsea, QC followed immediately by a reception at the Meredith Centre, Chelsea. The burial of ashes will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shepherds of Good Hope would be most welcome and appreciated.
