Obituary for Laura Zahava Sobel (Sobel)

SOBEL, Laura Zahava
August 9, 1985 – April 28, 2016

On April 28, 2016, at home and surrounded by her family, of metastatic breast cancer at the age of 30. Laura was much loved by her parents, Miriam and Alan, sister Emma (Josh Ginsberg), brother Michael, her new husband Justin Francis, and her little dogs, Gatsby and Tuukka. Her loss is devastating to us all. Laura graduated from Queen’s University then pursued her lifelong dream and became an English teacher in the OCDSB. She excelled in her profession and was much loved by her students and colleagues. Laura had an open mind and a kind heart. Her sweetness, tenacity, and steadfast courage outpaced all that life threw at her. She felt deeply, always chose to be happy, and never gave up. The family would like to express our enduring appreciation to The Ottawa Hospital and the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation Maplesoft Centre. We would like to thank doctors Chang and Sulpher, and Laura’s palliative care team, especially doctors Hacker and Spacek and nurses Susann and Jodi. Thank you, too, to the many friends who were present and supportive of us over the last ten months. Our family has been deeply touched by your caring and generosity. Funeral Service will be held at the Jewish Community Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa on Sunday May 1 at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Jewish Memorial Gardens, 6549 Herberts Corners Road, Osgoode. Shiva and services will be at the home of Miriam and Alan Sobel. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, Hospice Care Ottawa, or the Ottawa Breast Health Diagnostic Centre.
