Obituary for Marion Kathleen Jamieson (Hamilton)

Marion Kathleen Jamieson (Hamilton)
Marion Jamieson
Marion Kathleen Jamieson (née Hamilton) died peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Ottawa General Hospital on March 23rd, 2017 in her 98th year.
Predeceased by her husband Thomas Alexander Jamieson, son Tom Jamieson and sisters, Jean Lavoie and Audrey Wilson.
Beloved mother of Judy Salley (Brian, decd), Lynn Jamieson (Geoff Lester, decd), Ruth Jamieson (Ian Taylor, decd), Bruce Jamieson and Nancy Jamieson (Bruce Anderson).
Adored grandmother of Jill Salley, Pam Salley (Mike Bunga), Alexander Jamieson, Andrew Clark (Susan Catto), Matthew Clark (Heidi Soulen Clark), Amy Lester, Jean Taylor (Ben Fetton), Anna Taylor, Kate Purchase (Perry Tsergas) and Mollie Anderson and great-grand mother to Jesse, Sheena, Ella, Spencer, Amelia, Henry, Maeve, Jamie, Isla, Saoirse and Aoife.
Together with her husband Tom, Marion inspired a deep and lasting love of poetry, literature, art, history and politics in their children. She taught them the equal importance of generosity of spirit and service to others, which she learned from her own parents. She had a keen eye for beauty and a remarkable artistic flare, made manifest in her prodigious output of needlework --from smocked dresses to marvelous sweaters to a knitted Noah's Ark – all made with love. This pastime gave her enormous pleasure and still another way to express her love for her family.
She took to the role of ‘Granny J’ with impish joy and boundless enthusiasm, in the weekly Sunday visits of her grandchildren and in summer months at Wolfe Lake.
Countless family friends and relatives came to regard her as their second Mother. Marion’s home was always open to anyone in need of refuge, advice or encouragement, where cups of tea were dispensed with an admonition to ‘look on the bright side’, pearls of occasionally more blunt wisdom and always much laughter.
She was proud of her deep Ottawa Valley roots, frequently regaling her family with stories of her youth and touting the values instilled by four generations of Scotch and Irish immigrant ancestors. She was equally delighted to have obtained her Irish citizenship at the age of 92 years.
Above all, Marion was joyful. Even when faced with her own illnesses and the loss of many loved ones, she remained a relentlessly cheerful soul, taking joy in life’s little moments and its big ones. She often said ‘Life was to be enjoyed, not endured’ and that she did. She was renowned for her quick wit, generous to a fault, always grateful for the kindness of others and inspired that graciousness and generosity in others. She brought love, laughter, comfort and joy to everyone who loved her and for that she will deeply missed.
Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus, for their exemplary care of Marion in her final days and our heartfelt gratitude to Abby at the Lord Lansdowne for her loving, compassionate support of Marion over the last two years.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Interment this spring at St. Fillan’s Cemetery, Carleton Place, ON.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marion’s memory to Abbotsford House, where she volunteered weekly with Alzheimer patients well into her mid 90s. Cheques may be made payable to ‘The Glebe Centre, Community Programs (Abbotsford)’ at 950 Bank Street
