Condolences

Condolence From: Ross Paul
Condolence: Dear Jill and family and Scott: This is very late because I was overseas and out of contact for a couple of weeks. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on Bill's passing. I have so many happy memories of him -- notably from Dawson and especially sharing a room with him on Nitza Parry's Israel trip when we delighted in making screwdrivers from backyard grapefruit trees and stealing Squee's shoes that he had left out at a hotel for polishing. Bill was well ahead of his time in his commitment to students and in his belief in the goodness and potential of everyone. The road was not always easy, notably through the CLA crisis at Dawson but he never lost his sense of humour nor his belief in the best of people. It has always been a delight to receive great anecdoes from "jillbill" online and I loved the Snowdon books, rekindling fond memories of the Snowdon Fastball League. I am deeply saddened by his loss but warmed by his memory. He really made a wonderful difference for so many and I know that you are all very proud of him, as am I. Ross

Condolence: To the family and friends of Bill Conrod, I send my deepest sympathies on your saddest loss. Bill Was the "Dawson Spirit"; he Was the "Dawson Experience"; he lit the path for all of us working in Student Services, and showed us how to do it right. What goodness, or fairness that remains in the halls of Dawson is only Thanks to Bill, and the love he left behind. RIP Bill. You were so loved by so many.

Condolence From: Christine Nestruck
Condolence: Sincere condolences to the Conrod family. My mother, Katherine Nestruck and Bill’s mother were both nurses with the Protestant School Board of Montreal in the late 50’s early 60’s. They developed a close friendship outside of the workplace, such that I remember visiting their home in Snowden and meeting him and Scott and Anne. My mother is now 98 and has been living in Ottawa for 20 years. I showed her the obituary and she was saddened. Peace to all, Christine

Condolence: My sympathy to the family and friends. Bill and I were literacy acquaintances when he was at Algonquin and I was at The Ottawa Citizen. Mostly I saw him at a once-a-year fund-raiser for local literacy efforts. But we always had spirited talks about literacy -- and what needed to be done. I always left these talks inspired.

While our personal involvement was remote, Bill's contributions on the many levels attested by his family, friends and colleagues are heartwarming. Ad multos annos !

Condolence From: Terry Callaghan
Condolence: Bill hired me as an Asst. Director of Student Services at Dawson in 1976. All the praise and glowing tributes that I read in his obituary are indeed accurate and well deserved. Bill was my "boss" for many years but more importantly he was my role model, an inspiration and a friend. He was real, open, kind, funny, creative, supportive. Everybody loved Bill! How could you not! After Bill moved on to Conted. at Dawson and then to Ottawa I eventually became Director of Student Services. My mission, as I saw it, was simply to preserve and nourish what Bill had created: the best Student Service operation in Quebec. Bill didn't just "talk the talk" but he "walked the walk" of Student Service principles, values and ideals. He was one helluva guy! Thanks for everything Bill.

Condolence: My sincere condolences. I worked with Bill when he was at Dawson and enjoyed his encouragement of me, but even more his courage, his deep interest in education, his sense of humour and honesty, and his all too reliable bull... (they won't accept the S-word!) detector. My heart is with Jill and the progeny, and also with Bill's wonderful siblings.

Condolence From: David Gelinas
Condolence: I first met Bill in 1971 when roaming the new halls of Dawson College. I am visually impaired and ran into Bill. “Hi there” said Bill and introduced himself. “Conrod” I repeated, “so you’re not related to the famous Joseph Conrad.” I got the impression he smiled appreciatively and we maintained a connection throughout my years at Dawson and beyond. Bill was a member of the so called triumvirate with Paul Gallagher and Robert (Squee) Gordon who, we students believed, ran all Dawson machinery. Bill was a big help to me as a student and again when I was part of a team which created Dawson’s New School. We connected again in the mid 90s when, as always, he helped me out with some introductions I was interested in. In 2012 I lived in old Ottawa East for a spell and while walking the streets one day heard: “Hey Gelinas, what the heck are you doing here?” I was so glad to reconnect with an old comrade for whom I had so much respect. My condolences to everyone.

Condolence: ..he first appeared as a student teacher in our grade 8 group...the next year there he was as my home room teacher...I’ll never forget his holding up the “new math” book( the only copy)and explaining how he had no idea how it worked....that he would be learning it along with us .... We all did just that...he was that inspiring as a teacher... Bill could make a piece of chalk go wizzzzzz by your ear THAT close without touching you..it was impossible to doze in his classroom....😉

Condolence From: Bruce Vineberg
Condolence: It was with great sadness that I have learned of Mr. Controd’s passing. He was my teacher at Westmount HIgh in the 60’s. A cool guy, california licence plates, red cougar or mustang. What else could a young boy want? Mr. Conrod was a real positive force in my life. A teacher that cared and brought out the best in his students. How lucky I am that I had reached out and connected with my old teacher over the past few years. I shall forever remember his kindness as will all those whose life he touched. Rest In Peace my teacher.. Bruce Vineberg

He really cared about the students and encouraged them to go after their dreams. Bill was a wonderful person, caring, fun loving and so kind. Later, I worked in Student Affairs, one of the departments within Student Services.I will always have wonderful memories of him. My condolences to the Family.
