Obituary for Mary Tina Halipchak (Hnatiw)

Mary Tina Halipchak (Hnatiw)
With great sadness we announce the passing of Mary Halipchak at the Ravines Retirement Residence on Friday, February 1, 2019. Loving wife of the late Nicholas Halipchak and the much loved mother of Pauline, son-in-law Frederick and grandson Nicholas. Predeceased by two brothers and a sister in Ukraine.

She began her life in the small town of Seredniy Uhryniv, in Western Ukraine in 1925. At the young age of 17 she left her family to work as a farm labourer in Germany. She emigrated to Canada with the help of her cousin Dora and found work in Ottawa where she met her future husband. Mary was married in 1951 and had one daughter. Widowed in 1986, she continued to live with fierce independence in the same family home in the Glebe for 63 years. She was known by many in the neighborhood for her friendly, curious and feisty nature. She kept an immaculate household into her 90's and always enjoyed when friends and neighbors dropped by for a chat.
A heartfelt thank you to the RN Katie MacKenzie and caring staff of the Ravines, in particular Phil, Medhin, Fatima and Lorelei.

Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor), Ottawa on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 from 6p.m. - 8:30p.m. Panachyda at 7p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine, 952 Green Valley Crescent, Ottawa on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 10a.m. A Reception will follow in the Church Hall.
