Obituary for Rosemary Matthews (Brunsdon)

Rosemary Matthews (Brunsdon)
Peacefully, surrounded by family, Rosemary Matthews née Brunsdon, aged 88 years. Born in Southampton, England, Rosemary studied music from earliest childhood and became an accomplished pianist. At 20, she was a contestant at Queen Elizabeth of Belgium’s international piano competition in Brussels. In 1955, on an extended trip to Canada with a friend, she met Roy Matthews, also from England; they married later that year.
Roy and Rosemary had three sons and a daughter, with whom she shared her love of books, music, dogs and a good cup of tea. Her family and friends could always count on her to provide a sympathetic ear, endless comfort and unconditional love.
In addition to her husband of 63 years, Rosemary is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Paul (Elsa Suárez and son Nicolas); Ian (Diane de Grandmont and children Michèle, Sean (Nikki McConville), Brigitte (Marco Bernard and their children Raphaëlle and Frédérique), and Anne); Claire (Edwin Hubert and children Charlotte and Daniel); and Alex (“Ted”) (Rochelle Relyea).
The family wishes to thank everyone at the Ottawa Civic Hospital and the Villagia retirement home for all their help and comfort. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders or your local foodbank.
Friends are invited to the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) on Sunday, December 16, 2018. Visitation from 1-3pm with a Celebration of Rosemary’s life to be held in the chapel at 3pm.
