Obituary for Wadell Eileen Hurcomb (Thorson)

Wadell Eileen Hurcomb (nee Thorson)
May 5, 1919 – August 12, 2013

Wadell passed away quietly at the Garry Armstrong Residence in Ottawa on August 12.
She will be greatly missed by her children Frances (David), James (Diane) and Philip (Kathi) as well as by her 6 devoted grand daughters, Cait, Sarah, Kelly, Kathleen, Emma and Jamie. She is also survived by two sisters, Dorcas and June and brother Franklin. She was pre-deceased by her loving husband Philip, sister Frances and brothers Wilfred and Richard.
Wadell was born and raised in the small town of Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan and moved to Ottawa in 1939, where she found work with the Bank of Canada. Her bilingual education at the francophone convent in Gravelbourg served her well as she quickly rose through the ranks at the bank.
In 1948, she married Capt. Phil Hurcomb (RCN) and they began their family a year later.
Wadell was always a keen athlete and excelled at curling, golf and in her younger years, tennis. She served on the executives of both the RCN Curling Club in Ottawa and the Uplands Golf Club for many years, and competed in both sports at a high level.
Her main focus was always her family and her devotion will be remembered by all.
The family extends its thanks to the staff at Garry Armstrong for the fine care afforded their mother in the last years of her life.
An open house for family and friends will be held at the home of Phil and Kathi Hurcomb on Sunday, August 25, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
