Condolence: I'm not much younger than Steve, but very much considered him a mentor. For me, he modelled how to successfully represent Canada abroad. Steve never made himself the mission. He painstakingly pursued Canada's interests, managed his staff and resources with aplomb, and generously assisted his colleagues. The foreign service needs more true professionals like Steve Brereton! Our shared enthusiasm for baseball generated much opportunity for discussion and camaraderie. From the time he listened to my tales of Japanese language training woes in 1985 in Tokyo to our shared history at US posts, Steve was always a superlative colleague and friend, and just always a superb human being.
