Condolence From: Nima Ghomeshi
Condolence: I decided just now to look up José and see what he was up to and am shocked to learn of his passing. José was Director of the South America division when I joined it in 2004. He was a true leader and gentleman. I especially remember him as consistently kind and courteous and the harmony he created resonated through our division. I couldn't have asked for a better welcome. He will be missed. My condolences to the family.

Condolence: I had the great honour of working with Jose at the Canadian Embassy in Mexico about 10 years ago. I recall a tour of the Haciendas of the State of Morelos on one weekend and the great time we had, and his love of Mexican art, architecture and music. Until we meet again.

Condolence: I had the good fortune to work for José for two years at the Department of Foreign Affairs. He was a first class gentleman - decent, honest and blessed with a wry sense of humour. It was a pleasure to know Jose, and I extend my sympathies to his family. Bob Publicover Waterloo Ontario

Condolence: When I met José at Assumption Prep in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1967, I knew I was befriending someone for life and beyond. He was my brother Alfredo's roommate and a fine young gentleman sporting his forever smile. As the years passed, we lost track of each other but not for long as we eventually met up again in Panama when he was the Canadian Ambassador here. How grateful to see him again and learn of his successes in life! Now it's time to say au revoir, hasta luego dear friend, our condolences to all his dear family and friends.

Condolence: I am shocked at hearing of José’s passing. I so admired him. A wonderful man who so enriched Canada. I met him on our first day of law school at Osgoode Hall in Toronto. We were assigned to share lockers. You couldn’t have imagined a better locker partner. My life was in the locker. José, monk-like, hanged his coat. He never complained about my mess. After law school and articling Who should be At my first day as a junior foreign service officer in 1981, but my old locker mate. While I stayed back to work on the Gulf of Maine case José went off to Peru for TD. I believe that is where he met the indomitable Susanne. Wow. A fiercely patriot Canadian proud of his Colombian heritage (« the purest Spanish in South America according to José), in love with a exuberant acadienne. It was a match made in heaven. I remember my dinners at their home in Beacon Hill listening to José’s encyclopedic collection of Latin American music. What a loss.

Condolence: Jose was by far the most patient, kind and gentle person we have ever met. He also had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a willingness to share his insights. This made our time together always stimulating and rewarding. He also had a quick sense of humor which often manifested itself as playfulness. We will miss him dearly. Our sincere condolences to Susan, Katherine, Alexandra, family and friends.
