Obituary for Alice Joan Burnside (Taylor)

Alice Joan Burnside (nee Taylor)

Passing peacefully on January 27, 2021 in Sarasota, Florida and lovingly cared for to the end by her husband of 65 years, William (Bill) Burnside, we said goodbye to a wonderful Wife, Mother, Grandma, and Great Grandma, and to so many, a sincere friend and inspiration.

(Alice) Joan Burnside was born in Ottawa June 17, 1928 to Pauline Sarah Louise and Russell Gordon Taylor, a younger sister to Barbara (deceased) and Robert (Bob) (deceased) and lived a full and happy life in Ottawa.

Mother to Graham (Laura), Janet (Kelvin), Doug (Lynne), and Gillian, and Grandma to Daniel, Dennis, Jaime-Lynn, Meagan, Mallory, Chelsey, Leah, Chris, Brady, Brett, and honorary Grandma to Hillary and Kim. Great Grandma to her sweet Aden.

Second only to family, music played a meaningful, enduring role throughout Joan’s life. With her ARCT diploma ‘Solo Performer in Voice’, she performed theatre and opera, was the beloved soprano soloist at St. Andrews Church for 33 years, taught and mentored many, and formed a local choir of children, the Manotick Songbirds. Joan was an ardent supporter and worker at the Ottawa Kiwanis Music Festival for many years. Music fulfilled her, and filled our home.

Joan charmed our world with grace, kindness, compassion, acceptance, and patience that could make those around her feel uniquely special and appreciated. A tribute to her would be to find ways in our lives to carry her special brand of magic forward.

Joan was loved very dearly and will be missed by many.

In lieu of flowers we ask you to consider a donation to the Bruyère Foundation (Memory Program) in honour of her son Graham, the Ottawa Kiwanis Music Festival, or to the Arthritis Society.

A service and celebration of her life will be held at St. Andrews Church in Ottawa when family and friends are allowed to gather again.
