Obituary

Amelia Etelvina Mendonça (née Azevedo)
August 19, 1928 – August 30, 2020

On August 30, Amelia died at the General campus of The Ottawa Hospital. She had just celebrated her 92nd birthday. Amelia is survived by her loving son, Liberio (Lib) Mendonça, cherished daughter-in-law, Sheila Mendonça and her beloved grandson, Nathan Mendonça.
She will be greatly missed by her close friend, Ilario Pellizzari and his daughter, Anna Pellizzari.

She will be mourned by her sister, Alice Garcia, her brother, Jose Azevedo and her sister-in-law, Maria Valentina Azevedo as well as her nieces and nephews and their families and other extended family members. Amelia had many friends from her neighbourhood, work life and seamstress business and beyond. She will be sadly missed by them all.

Amelia was predeceased by her husband, Antonio Mendonça and her brothers, Joao Azevedo and Manuel Azevedo and by her sister-in-law, Maria Azevedo.

Amelia Mendonça was born in Feteira, Faial, Açores. She came to Canada in 1956 with her husband, Antonio (Tony), and young son and made a new life here. By hard work and saving, they were able to purchase their own home and income property in 1967. As well as rental income, Amelia made extra money as a skilled seamstress in her home-based business. In later life, Antonio was in poor health and Amelia became the primary caregiver and income earner. Amelia was widowed over 20 years ago and continued to live in her home where she entertained friends and family. She was a devoted housekeeper and loved her vegetable garden which she tended to every year, including the grape vines beloved by Tony and pillaged by the local raccoons. She continued her sewing well into her 80s. A few years ago, a devastating house fire forced her to move into a seniors’ residence. It was a wrench to lose her house but with support from family and friends, she adapted to her new living circumstances.

Because he has been exposed to COVID-19, Lib must isolate for 14 days and is not able to attend a funeral service so a memorial will be held at a later date. In the meantime, interment will occur at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Vanier this Friday, September 4 at 12:30 pm where Amelia will be laid to rest with her beloved Tony.

Memorial donations may be made directly to The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County at dementiasociety.thankyou4caring.org or to a charity of your choice.
