Obituary for Brent Douglas Toohey

With heavy hearts we announce that our beloved husband and father, Brent Toohey, passed away at our home in the early hours of April 25th at the age of 53.

Brent is survived by wife Danielle Avery and son Jacob Toohey, cats Clark and Jimmy. Sister Jennifer Toohey (Scott Borish) and brother Darren Toohey share in this enormous loss. He was predeceased by his parents, Ronald and Carol Toohey (nee Haffie). Brent will be missed by many Aunts and Uncles, as well as his nieces.

Brent was diagnosed with ALS in 2015 and showed us all the real meaning of living with perseverance and grace when faced with insurmountable difficulties.

A proud Mount Allison graduate, Brent pursued a career in IT, loving the challenge of that ever-changing landscape.

He was a natural athlete, a beautiful skier as an instructor and dedicated Nancy Greene coach, and a runner. He played hockey, but not very well, and often led the league in penalty minutes and pints consumed.

Brent dedicated many hours coaching Little League with Carlingwood Frank Ryan, and hockey at Sandy Hill. He took the time to instill sportsmanship and respect on the field, as well as sharing his passion for the sport to create lifelong baseball, hockey, and skiing enthusiasts.

Brent and Danielle were lucky enough to visit Cuba where Brent fell in love with a good cigar. For those of you who enjoy a cigar, he would be honoured if you enjoyed one in his memory.

Friends are invited to view the Virtual Celebration of Brent’s Life held on Saturday, May 8th at 7 pm.

Family and friends are encouraged to upload cherished photographs and share your favourite stories of Brent on this website.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at the ALS Clinic at the Rehab Centre in Ottawa and Dr. Bernie MacIntosh for his compassionate and attentive palliative care. We owe a world of gratitude to the staff at VHA for giving Brent dignified care throughout his illness.

In lieu of sending flowers, please consider making a donation to the ALS society of Canada, or plant a flower and have a pint in his honour.

We share this Video Tribute with you in honouring Brent’s life.

Fly far beyond this dark mountain
To where you'll be free evermore
Fly away, little pretty bird
Where the cold winter winds don't blow
