It is with great sadness that we would like to inform you that Dr. Bronwyn Elizabeth Keatley, 43, has died on March 4th, 2022, after a long illness, surrounded by the love of family at her home in Ottawa.

Born March 31, 1978, to Sondra (Green) and Edward Evans Keatley of Arnprior, Bronwyn studied biology at Queen’s University at Kingston, ON, and earned her PhD in paleolimnology. Her field work took her to the High Arctic, where she met her husband, Alexandre, in 2004. They married in France in 2008 and settled in Ottawa, where Bronwyn pursued a career as public servant. Kind, perceptive, quick-witted, strong, and generous, Bronwyn collected friends wherever she went, and the gift of her friendship will be forever treasured by many. When she and Alex welcomed Colm and Émile in 2011, Bronwyn approached the parenting of twins with characteristic courage and calm. She took undaunted joy in taking them on adventures and introducing them to the natural world, in Canada or abroad. She wanted fiercely to stay with them and outlived all prognoses to do so. That devotion will resonate through the rest of their lives. 

She is cherished and survived by her husband, Alexandre Poulain, and their children, Émile and Colm; her parents, Sondra and Evans; her beloved aunt, Beth McFarlane; her mother-in-law, Anne-Marie Poulain; her sister, Sarah (Jonathan) Sewter, and brother, Josh (Catherine) Keatley; her brother-in-law Clément (Perrine) Poulain; and her nieces and nephews, Annika, Noomi, Claire, Liam, Lachlan, Léontine, and Arthur. She is predeceased by her father-in-law, Jacques Poulain.

Heartfelt gratitude goes out to her medical team, including Dr. Anand Govindarajan from Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Dr. Derek Jonker, Dr. Catalina Hernandez-Torres, Rita Brault, and the home TPN team at the Ottawa Hospital, and especially to the exceptional palliative care services of Dr. Regine Krechowicz and home care nurse Mellissa Glover, who made it possible for Bronwyn to stay at home in relative comfort as she wished. We also would like to express our appreciation to families, friends, and colleagues, who have supported us over the past years.

A private ceremony for family has already been arranged, and a larger celebration of Bronwyn’s life will take place at a future date. C’est avec une immense tristesse que nous vous annonçons le décès de Bronwyn Elizabeth Keatley, 43 ans, en date du 4 mars 2022 après une longue maladie, entourée de l'amour de sa famille à son domicile à Ottawa.

Née le 31 mars 1978 de Sondra (Green) et Edward Evans Keatley d'Arnprior, Bronwyn a étudié la biologie à l'Université Queen's à Kingston, en Ontario, et a obtenu un doctorat en paléolimnologie. Ses recherches l’ont conduite dans l'Extrême-Arctique, où elle a rencontré son mari, Alexandre, en 2004. Ils se sont mariés en France en 2008 et se sont installés à Ottawa où Bronwyn a poursuivi une carrière au sein du gouvernement fédéral. Attentionnée, généreuse, forte, et douée d’une intelligence pénétrante et subtile, Bronwyn s'est fait des amis partout où elle est allée et son amitié sera à jamais chérie par beaucoup. Lorsqu’avec Alex ils ont accueilli Colm et Émile en 2011, Bronwyn a abordé le rôle de parent avec le courage et le calme qui la caractérisent. Elle a pris un plaisir non feint à partir à l’aventure avec eux, mais aussi à leur faire découvrir la nature qui les entoure, que ce soit au Canada ou à l’étranger. Elle voulait farouchement rester avec eux et a survécu à tous les pronostics pour y parvenir. Cette dévotion résonnera durant le reste de leur vie. 

Elle laisse dans le deuil son époux, Alexandre Poulain, et leurs enfants, Émile et Colm ; ses parents, Sondra et Evans ; sa tante bien-aimée, Beth McFarlane ; sa belle-mère, Anne-Marie Poulain ; sa sœur, Sarah (Jonathan) Sewter, et son frère, Josh (Catherine) Keatley ; son beau-frère Clément (Perrine) Poulain ; et ses nièces et neveux, Annika, Noomi, Claire, Liam, Lachlan, Léontine, et Arthur. 

Nous tenons à remercier son équipe médicale, notamment Dr. Anand Govindarajan du Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Dr. Derek Jonker, Dr. Catalina Hernandez-Torres, Rita Brault, et l’équipe du TPN à domicile de l’hôpital d’Ottawa, et surtout les services exceptionnels de soins palliatifs du Dr Regine Krechowicz, et de Mellissa Glover, son infirmière, qui ont permis à Bronwyn de rester chez elle dans un confort relatif, comme elle le souhaitait. Nous tenons également à exprimer notre gratitude aux familles, aux amis et aux collègues qui nous ont soutenu ces dernières années.

Selon ses dernières volontés, une cérémonie s’est déroulée dans la plus stricte intimité et une célébration de sa vie se tiendra à une date ultérieure. Au lieu de fleurs, les amis et la famille de Bronwyn ont établi une bourse d'études en son nom à l'Université Queen's.
