Obituary for Carol Eileen Steers (Steers)

Carol Eileen Steers (Steers)
Carol Eileen Steers died March 11, 2020, at the Perley & Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre. Born in Ottawa, on October 19, 1943, she spent most of her adult life living and working in Montreal, where she made lasting friendships with many. Daughter of the late Noel Steers and Mary (Maime) Devlin, Carol leaves behind her sisters Anne Liberman (Jean-Claude), Judy Charles (late David), Mary Bowen (Jim) and several nieces and nephews, each of whom considered her the “favourite aunt”, for the kind affection and interest she bestowed on them. Her brother Roderick Steers (Barbara) predeceased her in 2013. Carol also leaves behind a strong group of dear friends, most notably her lifelong and closest friend, Francine Howe.

Carol’s eclectic career was shaped by her love of people and travel. She opened her own travel business, worked for several airlines, and finally, was Director of Marketing for Westmount One retirement residence in Montreal, where she thrived on making each of the residents feel special.

Carol was known and loved by many, for her generous nature, kind approach to all, and her amazing wit. Though diminished by Alzheimer’s disease in the last years of her life, she continued to make those around her laugh often. Her trademark one liners and meaningful facial expressions continued to the very end of her life.

Carol’s family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the staff of the Perley, who cared for Carol with respect and compassion, and to her faithful caregiver Janet Band, who lovingly accompanied Carol on her journey through Alzheimer’s.

There will be no visitation. A Celebration of Carol’s life will take place in the coming weeks. Those wishing to honour Carol’s memory are invited to make a donation to Dying with Dignity Canada (Ottawa Chapter) https://www.dyingwithdignity.ca/ottawa or the Alzheimer’s Society Canada (Ottawa and Renfrew County) https://alzheimer.ca/en/ottawa.
