Obituary for Christopher Stoney

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Christopher Stoney on December 11, 2021 in Ottawa, after a four-month battle with cancer. Chris was a man who lived life with such joie de vivre, energy and passion, who made great friends everywhere he went, and who loved his family with devotion. All those who knew him – his family, friends, colleagues, students, fellow golfers and neighbours – will remember Chris’ genuine, warm and enthusiastic personality and will miss him forever.

Chris was the beloved husband of Catherine Waters and devoted father of Alexander and Claire. As a family man, Chris passed on his interests, sports talents and commitment to education to his children, who were as much his closest friends as his beloved kids. Chris is also survived by his two older brothers Stephen (Carol) and Kevin (Jackie) and his nephews, niece and their children, in England, Cyprus and Israel. Wherever he went, Chris always retained his love for Yorkshire where he was born in 1962, and also for his adopted home of Victoria and Vancouver where his family-in-law live.

Chris loved his job as a professor and academic at Carleton University’s School of Public Policy and Administration. He especially loved his role as a teacher and this was recognized in teaching awards and the respect and admiration of so many of his students. He started his teaching career at Imperial College at the University of London before moving to Canada in 2003. Chris loved Canada and was so proud to become a Canadian. His research in local government and advocacy for community-driven policy were widely recognized. Even as we mourn our loss, we celebrate this wonderful man and the life he lived.
