Obituary for David Alexander Stevenson

Stevenson, David Alexander
1921-2021

Passed away peacefully and valiantly with his family by his side in Kingston General Hospital on March 1, 2021. David Stevenson, in his 100th year, beloved husband and best friend of the late Joyce Stevenson for 67 years. Amazing and loving father of Sandra McCance (John), Kingston and the late James Stevenson (Sandra Benoit), Blakeney. Special Poppa to Gordon McCance (Erin Dixon), Kingston; Eric McCance, Oakville and Alexander Graham Stevenson, Ottawa. Great-Granddad to Kate and Will McCance. Dear son of the late Alec and Mildred Stevenson. Born in Harbour Grace NL, David graduated from Memorial University and Nova Scotia Tech as a civil engineer. After a very short stint in the Canadian Army (thankfully WWII ended), he taught at Dalhousie University before starting his career in telecommunications with Bell Canada in Montreal, Toronto, and finally joined Bell-Northern Research/Nortel in Ottawa. An inveterate problem solver and curious man, he was awarded a patent for his cable lasher and was recognized by the naming of a conference room at BNR. His passions included his family, sailing, woodworking, genealogy, and research on The Bear, a famous, ice-worthy Newfoundland sealer, which was captained by his great-grandfather Alexander Graham and participated in the Arctic search for the Greely expedition as well as Byrd’s Antarctic expedition. At the family’s request there will be no services at this time. A special thanks to Kingston General Hospital staff for the recent wonderful care given to David and to the wonderful staff at Royale Place where he lived happily for the past two years. Donations to the Naval Marine Archive – The Canadian Collection, Picton ON (http://navalmarinearchive.com/) gratefully accepted.
