She spent the next 28 years there doing research and taking care of children with blood disorder and cancer. During the earlier years of her career, the survival rate of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia was less than 10%.Thanks to Elizabeth, her co-workers and other researchers, by the time of her retirement, the 5-year survival rate had improved to over 90%. Elizabeth also taught multiple medical students, residents and fellows on the art and science of taking care of sick children. She was a Christian and did missionary work after retirement in Asia and Africa.

Elizabeth was diagnosed with metastatic non small cell lung cancer in 2013 despite being a nonsmoker. She had fought valiantly and continued to be active over the last 7 years. Elizabeth is survived by her brothers Peter and Frank S.F. Hsu, her sister Pauline Borgens, her sister-in-law Irene Hsu and their families.
