Obituary for Elizabeth Szirtes (Roth)

After a lengthy and courageous battle our mother has now found peace. Survived by husband Julian, her one true love and partner of 68 years, sons Peter (Debra) and Richard (Bonnie), grandchildren Jaime (Jonny) Cracower, Jessica (Caley) Adair, Samantha and Sabrina and great grandchildren Judah and Jacob. May she find comfort in rejoining with her father Morne, mother Gisella and sister Magda.

From an early age Elizabeth proved her strength, surviving the ghettos of Budapest with their dark days of anti-Semitism. As a refugee she endured the stresses of escape and the hardships of starting a new life in a new land without money, language or community. But through a combination of optimism and perseverance Elizabeth and Julian created more than a new life, they created a home. A home where family always came first, even in business where family members worked together in multiple successful transportation endeavors.

Either as a teacher of political science, an executive administrator, a wife or as a mother, Elizabeth excelled in every challenge. A vibrant and versatile conversationalist, she could as easily make you laugh as engage you in heated debate. A master of Hungarian cuisine, her creations were always delicious, intense with spices and flavors that left you yearning for more. Possessing a radiant smile, flawless skin and an impressive sense of fashion, she was the jewel in Julian’s eye, forever in love from the first moment they met. Intelligent, talented and beautiful, a shining star that enthralled and brightened the lives of all who knew her.

More than anything, Elizabeth cherished being surrounded by her family. Friday night gatherings and holidays were her favorite times when everyone would come together. “I don’t need anything else as long as you are all here with me” was the only gift she ever asked for. When she spoke of her family, you could feel the emotion and pride in every syllable.

With unwavering determination Elizabeth wove her way through life's obstacles with elegance and grace. She will be missed for the happiness that she brought and for the love that she gave. A complex yet straightforward woman, she would be the first to agree that she lived a full and blessed life. Her memory lives on within us and provides us comfort knowing that she is always near.

We extend a special thank you to Rosa and Emma for their compassionate care and to Robyn and all care providers and staff at Amica Westboro Park for their assistance and kindness. Private graveside service held at Jewish Memorial Gardens. Donations to the Ottawa Cancer Society or Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation (Holocaust Education) appreciated.
