Obituary for Ewen John Newton

Ewen John Newton passed away on December 28, 2020 at the Elisabeth Bruyere Palliative Care Unit. He was born on August 10,1945 to Ted and Elspeth Newton in Toronto. He will be missed by his family: wife Glynda (Heron) of 36 years; sons Matthew and Michael (child-in-law Eliot); siblings Lorn (Karen) and Mary DeGrow, five nieces and nephews and their families; brothers-in-law Robert Heron (Marlis), Ron Heron, Murray Heron (Teresa), sister-in-law Jan Anweiler (Bob), six nieces and nephews and their families. Ewen was predeceased by his parents Ted and Elspeth Newton, brother James and brother-in-law Don DeGrow, father-in-law and mother-in-law Fulton and Ruth Heron and great niece Cassidy Gosling.

Ewen grew up in Deep River and attended McMaster University (Physics) and Queen’s University (Political Science). He worked for the Federal Government for many years. Ewen and Glynda spent many years bicycle riding, wind surfing, kayaking and camping in their motor home, with trips from Ottawa to Alberta and PEI and all the provinces in between. They were disappointed at not being able to take their planned trip to Manitoulin Island in the summer of 2020 due to the pandemic. After marrying Glynda he felt a strong connection to the Saskatchewan communities of Shackleton and Cabri, where they visited family and friends many times over the years. “Brilliant, thoughtful, caring, considerate, loving.”

Due to the challenges of Covid, a private family graveside service will be held at the cemetery in Cormack, ON.

Donations in memory of Ewen may be made to the Elisabeth Bruyere Foundation Palliative Care Unit, 43 Bruyere St., Ottawa, ON K1N 5C8.
