A former civil servant and biomedical expert, passed away on April 27, 2021 in Ottawa, at the age of 98. He immigrated to Canada following World War II, pursued his education while working full-time, and earned many distinctions from both government and industry.
His beloved wife, Jessie, passed away in August 2020. Fred is survived by his daughter Seline ( Jason), grandchildren Alexa (Jamie), Dylan, and newborn great-grandson Julian . A small gathering attended his burial on April 29. 2021.
Fred passed away at Hillel Lodge in Ottawa this morning. In his 99th year Feed’s life was one of determination and achievement. While still in his teens Fred escaped Poland with his brother Jay and survived the war in a Russian labour camp. The rest of their family were killed in the Shoa. When he first arrived in Montreal in the early 50’s he worked in a dress factory but determined to better himself, he attended evening classes at Sir George Williams University. After graduation he enrolled at the biomedical engineering faculty at McGill University. As an electrical engineer Fred worked for Health Canada inventing, testing and approving medical devices. Fred was a pioneer in the development of pacemakers. A master of six languages Fred enjoyed every intellectual path he could find. In any language the pursuit of knowledge through learning is his legacy.
