Obituary for Dr. Harold H. Fireman

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Harold H. Fireman of Ottawa, on the 24th May, 2020, of natural causes just short of his 101st birthday. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Eleanor Dover, Toronto, his sister Gertrude Frank, 103, Toronto, his children Calla and Jay and many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand nephews.

Harold was born and raised in Toronto, graduating from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1942. He spent over 4 years with the Canadian Air Force as a medical advisor mostly in Newfoundland, returning to a long and successful career in Internal Medicine in Ottawa. He taught at the University of Ottawa as a guest lecturer on Rheumatology. One of his proudest achievements came at the Ottawa Civic Hospital where he was chosen as the 'intern in attendance' at the birth of Princess Margriet of Holland during WWII when Ottawa offered the Dutch Royal Family a safe haven. He was married for 56 years to the love of his life, Joy Dover Fireman, deceased in 2004; a son Leslie Scott Fireman was deceased in 2010. Harold loved to travel and would give slide shows of his trips on his return, commentating from his photographic memory. He and Joy were well known for their lavish parties, their love of fine art and antiques. After retiring at 88, he spent many competitive hours playing bridge and tennis. He was always a gentle man and the consummate gentleman. For more information, see Google.

No funeral. Many thanks to all the staff at Governor's Walk Retirement Home where Harold was much loved and well taken care of during his last 2 and a half years. Special thanks to Quince, Holly and above all, Roselyn (Rosie). Donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences c/o C. Fireman, 10 the Driveway, Apt. 803. Ottawa, ON, K2P 1C7.
