Obituary for Hugh Michael Tolan

It is with much sadness that we share the news that Michael Tolan passed away at the Ottawa General Hospital on March 10, 2022 at the age of 65.

Michael leaves behind his beloved wife Marla; his sisters Sharon (Pierre Roach), and Kathleen (Jeff Tracey); nieces Sarah (Alexander Chase), Elizabeth (Andrew Latty), and Emily (Rodney Stoelwinder); great nieces and nephew Mackenzie, Addison, Thomas and Hannah; and, his uncle and aunt Robert (Erna) and Mildred.  Michael is predeceased by his parents Hugh and Margaret (nee Creaney) and his brother Shaun Patrick.

Simply put, to know Michael was to love him.  Michael had a laugh that was contagious, a joie de vie unmatched by any, and a smile that we will never forget.

Michael was born in Montreal on October 3, 1956.  He moved to Ottawa in 1966 where he went to high school and university. Michael was a natural athlete who excelled at every sport. He played varsity football at Carleton University, and was a great basketball player, skier, runner, triathlete, and excelled at tennis.  As both the oldest in the family and a versatile athlete, Michael was a big influence on his younger sisters as they spent time on the ski hills, basketball courts, and at various races.

In 1983 Michael moved to British Columbia and started what would become a very successful career in the pharmaceutical industry.  Michael loved his years in Vancouver, and had great memories of time spent with the many friends he made during those years. In 2012, Michael returned to Ottawa to be close to family. Michael, together with his wife Marla, found much joy in these last years.

In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations to the Ukrainian Red Cross Society or Doctors Without Borders. At Michael’s request, a private service will be held for the family.
