Obituary for Ian Thornley Smith

Ian Thornley Smith passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his devoted family and dearest friends on Monday, June 6th, 2022, after a brief illness. Ian was the beloved husband of Sharlyn ‘Charlie’ Ayotte, loving dad to dear daughter Shannon Bertrand, née Deault (Greg Bertrand); adoring grandfather ‘G’Pa’ to Linc Higgison, Wynter Bertrand and Taylor Deault (Jordan Lepine); and doting greatgrandfather to Brooklynn, Wren and Noah Lepine. Ian was predeceased by his mother, Kathleen Smith, née Coolen; father, Edward T. Smith; and brother, Brian T. Smith.

Ian was born on June 23rd, 1951, in Hamilton, Ontario—the family moved to Montreal and Ian grew up in Pierrefonds, Quebec. He graduated from the University of New Brunswick and spent 2 years overseas with CUSO teaching high school in Moshi, Tanzania. Subsequently, Ian became an accountant and for many years ran his own accounting firm, ITS Enterprise, in Ottawa. Even in his semi-retirement, Ian generously took time from golfing each spring to ensure that friends, family and clients had their taxes in on time.

Climbing Kilimanjaro, sailing the famed Bermuda Race and swimming in Antarctica were some highlights of Ian’s spectacular international travel adventures. He was an avid golfer, a passionate hockey fan—and player—and was famous for his spicy Super Bowl chili. Together, Ian and Charlie created a magical home at Chateau Fentiman, their revered and storied house in Old Ottawa South by the Rideau River where they lived happily for decades and graciously entertained guests from near and far. A tender-hearted family man, a loyal friend and generous host—Ian will be sorely missed and forever remembered—may he rest in peace.

Ian’s family extends heartfelt thanks to their kind neighbours and friends in the Ottawa South community, lifelong friends from afar, the devoted staff of the Ottawa General Hospital and the dedicated palliative care-takers that made it possible for Ian to be at home during his last days.

A celebration of life will be held later this summer. Donations to the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (canadahelps.org) would be appreciated.
