Obituary for Irma Hildegard Lange

Early Friday morning, April 9, 2021, Irma Lange, passed away at the age of 100.

Irma was born on September 23, 1920, in High Falls, QC to Kurt and Elizabeth (Cheslock) Lange.

She resided as a shut-in at the Elisabeth Bruyère Residence (Ottawa) for several years, however these last years of her life cannot define who she was at heart. At heart, Irma was indeed a woman who had passion, commitment, and dedication to be of service to those around her.

She began a journey to a self-made woman with her first job at age 16 working for the Department of National Defence (DND) during WW2. She enjoyed the military aspect of DND and continued working there for 45 years.

Irma rarely talked about how she spent her time, but to be sure, she always wanted to help. Some of the highlights of her acts of service include the years she volunteered with the St. John’s Ambulance, Meals-on-wheels, and as an active member of her beloved St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. At St. Paul’s she enjoyed serving as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Mixed Choir, and was a committed overseer of the St. Paul kitchen. Many may also remember her for her individual generosity and charity.

For those who worked with her closely in any capacity it was no secret that there was usually only one right way to do things. Many may remember her for her no-nonsense approach and the learning of the “right way”. She was a force to be reckoned with and will be missed.

Irma was preceded in death by her brothers Erhard and Ralph, and sister Gerta, as well as her long-time companion, Lyle Stevenson.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, Donna, Sandra, and Kirk Lange (and their families), and Roger, Gordon, Shirley, Susan, and Ivan McGlashan (and their families).

A memorial service (with Covid restrictions) is being planned with the Lange family.
