Obituary for James "Alex" Meldrum

Alex (pronounced Alec, according to Dad and Scottish tradition) passed away peacefully in his sleep at The Ravines Retirement Residence following a period of declining health due to dementia and Parkinson's. Predeceased by Doris Lillian (Caldwell), his wife of 52 years, in 2004 and by Dealtry Bell, his wife of seven years, in 2018 and by his parents Sarah (Barnett) and Ernest Stevenson Meldrum of Ottawa. Loving father of Beth (late John Matthews) of Halifax, NS; David (Kathy) of Petawawa, ON; Valerie Dowd of Ottawa, ON; and Colin (Jennifer) of New Westminster, BC. Proud and caring grandfather of Joshua Meldrum, Jessica McQuestion, Andrew (Maggie Fairholm), Emma and Rowan Dowd and Hannah, Sarah and Christian Meldrum, and great-grandfather of Eli McQuestion. Dad was a generous and caring father. He proudly supported all of his children and grandchildren with their post-secondary education. In his youth, he helped to establish the Vorlage ski club. He enjoyed gardening at the family home which he built in the Riverview Park neighbourhood in 1957, fishing and hunting with his chums at his hunt camp on the Madawaska River and, for the last 35 years, feeding the birds and chipmunks and tinkering away at the family cottage on Farren Lake. He was an accountant for International Paper in Gatineau, PQ, and a charter member of Pleasant Park Baptist Church. He loved storytelling, whistling, travelling to Portugal and Scotland, and, most importantly, having large family gatherings with all of the family at the cottage together. A special thanks to the PSW's, and nursing staff at the Ravines for their excellent care these past two years. There will be a private family gathering in the spring. Interment at Pinecrest Cemetery alongside our mother Doris.
