Obituary for Jean Josephine Dunnigan (Weatherdon)

Jean Josephine Dunnigan, 79, from Buckingham, Que., who had a love of music, family, knitting and her faith, passed away unexpectedly at the City View Retirement Community on January 12, 2022. Predeceased by her parents, Louis and Rose (Butler) Weatherdon, her husband, Basil, sisters Bernadette and Florence and daughter-in-law, Julie. Known for giving back to her community, she is survived by her children, Gail (Fred Shepherd), and Ed, her grandchildren, Connor and Thomas, brother Linus (Suzanne Grandmaison), brothers-in-law François Plouffe and Nelson Lawlor and godchildren Paul Teske and Travis Butler. Beloved aunt to Steven (Cheryl), Sharon, Normand (Cara), Joanne (Michel), Terry (Isabelle) and Tim (Nadia), she will also be sorely missed by her many friends and the innumerable cousins in the Weatherdon, Butler, Dunnigan and Burke families. She began her career working as a head secretary on Parliament Hill, and she was in the frontline of the crowd when U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited Canada in 1961. She wed in 1968 and a few years later moved into their family-built house on the farm in Mayo. She loved to sing in the choir and was an avid crafter, gardener, furniture refinisher, musician, genealogy researcher and volunteered with her churches, children’s schools and community organizations. In 1992, she began a career at the Shepherds of Good Hope that spanned 18 years. After retirement, she continued her volunteer and charitable activities, including knitting for Shepherds and area hospitals.

Memorial mass and burial at St. Malachy Roman Catholic Church, Mayo, Quebec on June 18th at 11 am, with visitation starting at 10am. We would love to have you all there.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shepherds of Good Hope or Mayo’s Our Lady of Knock Shrine would be a meaningful memorial. We would like to thank the staff at City View Retirement Community and the Champlain Local Integrated Health Network for their care, warmth and support.
