Obituary for Joan Sybil Roose (McCord)

ROOSE, Joan Sybil
1924-2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Joan Roose, January 7, 2021 at age 96. Joan was the loved and treasured mother of Don Wiggans (Cecily Quinn). She was predeceased by Ralph Roose, her loving and cherished husband and by her parents Russell and Vera McCord.

Joan was born September 12, 1924 in Ottawa. She was in her twenties when her father died and left her to manage the apartment buildings he owned. A devoted hockey mom she also enjoyed golf and curling. Joan loved teaching children bible verses at the Day School Gospel League. She would stand in the hall and offer hockey magazines to the boys who learned a verse. Joan changed so many lives. She met Ralph, the love of her life, when he spotted her in the congregation at church. They enjoyed long country drives photographing old barns and meeting people. Joan and Ralph were active members of the United and the Free Methodist Church. They opened their home for weekly bible studies. Her strong faith and incredibly positive attitude saw Joan through four hip surgeries and numerous hospital stays. Joan will be remembered by family and many friends for being so sweet, kind and loving. She was always grateful for all she had.

We would like to extend special thanks to Nelia Goncalves for all the loving care she gave Joan. You were always there for her. We are also incredibly grateful for the extraordinary nurses and PSWs at Embassy West Retirement Living. Your remarkable kindness and compassionate care of Joan eased her final weeks.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral will be private. We invite anyone who wishes to participate, to watch the funeral service via live stream on Tuesday, January 19th at 1:30pm. The livestream link can be found on Joan’s obituary page on the funeral home website.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s name may be made to Dominion Chalmers United Church, The Salvation Army Ottawa or to The Ottawa Mission.
