Condolence: Dear Family and Friends of Dr. John Dossetor, It was only last week that I learned of his passing. I think of him often and remember him for many reasons; his: - open mindedness (he thought thoughts ahead of his time, was unafraid to open windows and doors on new subjects in need of new visions), - intellectual and social courage (I thanked him then and I thank him now for listening to me as a young graduate student back in 1966 when he was among the very few who was culturally attuned to the health and social issues of indigenous people - he viewed research on these issues as important as any other kind of research, - his cultural wisdom and appreciation for the arts as part of creativity and mental/physical health, - his ability to write thoughtfully and well (I thank him for writing a lovely blurb for Through the Looking Glass: Children and Health Promotion (Jane Ross, Vangie Bergum, eds.), an anthology by international researchers on research from the perspective of children. - all the other lovely qualities expressed by others. The world is a better place because of Dr. John Dossetor. I feel blessed and strengthened each time I think of him. Appreciatively, Jane Ross

Condolence: I had the great honour of working with Dr. Dossetor in the mid 70's to mid 80's as Research Program Coordinator for the Head Office of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. I was always in awe of the enormous level of respect of respect he was accorded by all who knew him. Having had the privilege of knowing him and learning from him was one of the highlights of my career at the Foundation. My deepest sympathies to his family. The world has lost a great man.

Condolence: Dear Margaret and all of the Dossetor Family, I was honoured to have met Dr. Dossetor when he came in 2017 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Transplantation in Alberta. I got to spend time with him, drive him to the home where you used to live, visit some local coffee shops and visit the Health Ethics Centre, at the U of A named after him. He relayed so many great stories along with discussing past work and research projects. It was a real pleasure listening to him and getting to know him. Beforehand, I had only known 'of' him and his incredible accomplishments. He did so much for the kidney health and transplant communities and he will be honoured and remembered for the legacy he has left. I send you all of my thoughts and prayers to you during this difficult time. His was truly a life well lived. Condolence: I am the daughter of Dr Michael Kaye (and Marion Kaye - now deceased) who was a close friend of Dr Dossetor when they were nephrology colleagues in Montreal. My father is living in a retirement home in Burlington ON and I have sent him the obituary which was lovely to read. A rich and long life!

Condolence: Dear Dr. Clare Dossetor, Please accept my sincere condolences on the death of your beloved father. The tribute in the paper truly showed what a remarkable man and role model he was. In the midst of your grief and sadness take pride and joy that you were blessed to have him.

Condolence: Dr. Dosseter was a role model to me as a young physician at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. I will never forget his account of Canada's first kidney transplant between identical twin sisters. The recipient lived very well for years after it. He became a colleague in about 2007 when he became our Ombudsman at the CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal). His work was collegial but perceptive and demanding when he needed to be. Condolence: I met John when I was working with Cal Stiller on studies of cyclosporine in London Ontario in the early 1980s. I didn't get to know him well, but he left a lasting impression - I was always impressed with his kindness and wisdom. My sincere condolences.

Condolence: Please accept my condolences on the loss of your father, husband or friend. It was my great privilege to work with John as editor for his memoir "Beyond the Hippocratic Oath: A memoir on the rise of modern medical ethics" (University of Alberta Press, 2005). We had many intense, long conversations about ethics and editing, medicine and memories. He was a gentle man with a heartening chuckle and an ever-alert mind, who gave so very much to his profession. I will always remember him with great fondness.

Condolence: Dear Margaret and family, We are so sad to hear of John’s death. We have such happy memories of our lives crossing with you and John on Edinburgh Road and during a few short but memorable visits to you in Ottawa. We have often been reminded of John when we came across the Beamish name in Cork, which was pretty often since Johns family name is attached to the local stout drink in Cork.
