Obituary for John Eugene Pageau

August 13, 1927 – May 18, 2021

On Tuesday, May 18, 2021, in his 94th year, John Eugene Pageau placed his soul in God’s hands, ready to re-join his beloved wife, the late Catherine Margaret (née Smith). Born in Windsor, Ontario, John met and fell in love with Kay upon hearing her sing at a church function. They married, started a family and moved to Ottawa, where John began a long and distinguished career with Transport Canada. John volunteered throughout his life, from skating clinics to chess clubs, and later assisted the National Association of Federal Retirees. He had a wide range of interests and in his 80's and 90's he mastered a computer, scanner, email and video calls so that he could share clippings of specific relevance and keep in touch with his children and grandchildren. John dearly enjoyed music and would not miss an opportunity to join in. His harmonizing and whistling skills were trademark contributions. He regularly shared cartoons and puzzles in an effort to lift everyone’s spirits and he is remembered with smiles for all the jokes he delivered with a twinkle in his eye. It would take a book to summarize just the highlights of this man’s generous, kind and gentle life.

Left to mourn are his sons Gerrard (Deborah Waters) and Christopher (Catherine Partington), and his daughter Juliane (Jeff Martin). He is also remembered fondly by his sister Lorraine Chauvin and brother Leo Pageau. Predeceased by an infant son Charles; brother Ted, and sisters Agnes, Madeleine, Rosalie and Sister Claire-Marie CSJ. John proudly loved all his grandchildren: Whitney, Angela, Lauren, Derek, Claire, Evelyn and Daniel, as well as his great-grandsons Arlo and Oliver. He will be missed by his nieces and nephews, his many friends, as well as the amazing staff at Oakpark Retirement Community.

According to his wishes, his body was donated to the University of Ottawa's School of Anatomy. Arrangements are in the care of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry. While there will be no visitation, a Memorial Mass will be held. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice can be made in John’s memory.
