Captain Keith Cole Angus

Keith passed away in Kemptville District Hospital on Thursday, November 28, 2019, at the age of 98.
He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (nee Thomas), and is survived by: sons, Ian (Lis), Colin (Anne), and Graham (Barbara); daughter Val; grandchildren Jess Shulman, Amanda Kat Angus, Marley Filiptseva, Simon Boyce and Emily Boyce; and great-children Abby and Sam Shulman, Izaak and Pippa Boyce, Julia Boyce, and Peter Filiptsev.
Keith was born in Regina and spent most of his youth in Winnipeg. At age 15 he entered England's famous HMS Conway, a school that trained merchant navy officers. From 1938 to 1947 he travelled the world in merchant ships, working his way up from Apprentice to Captain.
Early in the war his first ship, the Silveryew, was torpedoed in the Atlantic, forcing him and other survivors to row a lifeboat 14 hours to St. Vincent island in Cape Verde. Later he participated in the "Murmansk run" convoys, extremely dangerous journeys that carried supplies to the main Russian port on the Arctic Ocean.
He married Margaret Thomas in 1944, and in 1947 left the sea to spend time with their growing family. For most of his working life he was in the marine division of Transport Canada, in Vancouver and Ottawa. In 1959, he and Margaret purchased and renovated an 1843-era farm house in Kemptville, and lived there for the rest of their lives.
From 1991 to 2006, Keith was one of the most-frequently published contributors to the weekly "Challenge" competition in the Globe & Mail. Until the day he died, he managed his daily tasks without assistance, and did the New York Times crossword puzzle every day. His wit, especially his love of puns, never flagged. His final passing, from a heart attack, was quick and relatively pain free.
