Obituary for Leila Cheryl Mackay

Leila Cheryl Mackay
Mackay, Leila Cheryl

February 3rd, 1962 – May 28th, 2020

Peacefully, at the age of 58, at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus on Thursday, May 28th shortly after 3:00 AM. Predeceased in 2019 by her beloved husband George Edward Wright in his 65th year. Loving mother of Jack Edward and Georgie Patrick Wright. Special Aunt to Emmett and Madeline, Jessie and Matthew, David and Lana. Dear daughter of Marta Mackay and the late John Patrick Mackay and dear sister of Lynne, Robin, Malcolm and Mark Mackay and their spouses Tony, Linda and Katherine. Leila loved travelling through the scenic Adirondacks with her boys, and visiting the Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid, NY where she would enjoy many of her favourite activities such as relaxing at the spa, sitting by the fire with George, Georgie, and Jack, and basking in nature’s beauty. Leila loved Christmas and other holidays, and her family fondly remembers being with her for their favourite holiday tradition of cutting down their own Christmas tree to set up in their home, and decorate accordingly. She loved decorating her home for any occasion, and entertaining her family and friends. Leila will be deeply missed by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing her, and her family will continue to remember her as they commemorate her life by engaging in all of her favourite activities and traditions. Born in Ottawa at the Grace Hospital, Leila attended Lady Evelyn and Hopewell Avenue Public Schools and Commerce High School. After graduating she pursued fashion design at Sheraton College and then began work as a dental assistant in Ottawa with Doctor Sam Lewinshtein. Later in life, while raising her two sons, Leila pursued a Bachelor degree in Psychology and Human Sciences at the University of Ottawa. In 2016, she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Spirituality at Saint Paul University. Soon after, Leila began work as a Registered psychotherapist (qualifying) for the TRAC Group and in her private practice under the supervision of Dr. Karen Ogston. She became President of the Association for Spirituality and Mental Health at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and helped numerous clients through her professional work. Special thanks to the Ottawa Hospital doctors and nurses for the wonderful care given to Leila and her husband George over the past year. Due to Covid restrictions, a private family service will be held with a public celebration of Leila’s life at a later date. Donations to the Royal Ottawa Foundation or the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation are gratefully accepted.
