Obituary for Lois Elizabeth Ann Batten (Lusk)

October 16, 1926 - February 4, 2021

Not wanting to be remembered as ‘sweet’ but more like ‘spirited’, Lois has departed this world, at the ripe old age of 94. We are saddened by her absence in our future lives, but she will live on in our hearts and memories. Lois, Lolo, Liz or Gawmy (as she was known) is survived by her three daughters, Brenda, Joan and Bonnie, 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

She was born in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, attended Stanstead College, and as a young woman, moved to the big city of Montreal for nurse’s training, graduating from the Montreal General Hospital in 1948. Soon thereafter she married Brock L. Batten, Jr. and moved to the West Island to raise their family and many dogs. Lois loved her flower gardens and finally found time to bash the golf ball around Kanawaki Golf Club. It was the only time she was willing to be given a handicap. After Brock’s unfortunate death in 1981 she moved to the Ottawa area. She travelled extensively and became a great adventurer in her own country and abroad, including riding a camel and building an igloo on many trips with Elderhostel. Through unfortunate circumstances she went blind in 2001 and became known as the little old lady with the white dog and white cane in the Glebe. She lived fiercely and independently for 18 years and remained an excellent cook (always with butter), and prided herself by keeping current in politics and spared no one from her strong opinions. She was a force to be reckoned with and will be missed. In lieu of flowers please donate to the CNIB.
