Obituary for Lorne Nelson Hooper

Hooper, Lorne Nelson

Peacefully in his sleep on November 30th, 2019 at the Perley & Rideau in his 98th year. Born in Ottawa, Ontario to parents William and May; predeceased by his wife, Yvonne, their infant son Lorne Ansley, and his brother Harry.
Lorne’s early years were spent in New York City, later returning to Ottawa where he attended Ottawa Technical High School. With a sense of duty and a desire to serve his country, Lorne enlisted in the Army just days after WW II was declared, at the age of 17. He would go on to have a 50 year career with the Department of National Defence, first in active duty after transferring to the Air Force as an air gunner and navigator and then a dedicated public servant.

“Hoop” was happiest when he was entertaining family and friends with his jokes, stories, obscure facts and Shakespearean soliloquies. He kept those around him in stitches (and sometimes groans), but none more than his long-suffering wife of nearly 75 years “Tootie”, his only daughter Linda and his son-in-law, John Fraser. Lorne was the kind of grandpa and great- grandpa that made other kids jealous – with his collection of gadgets, various sweet treats and in the genuine joy he exuded when in the company of Kirsten (Danny), John (Alina) and James (Sarah). It was not unusual to see him doubled over with laughter at the antics of Vaughan, Sloane and Fraser.

Lorne had a love of learning and a willingness to try new things that never faltered. Always open to new friendships and giving of his time, Lorne will leave a lasting mark on those he met while in service to others – including as a 60 year member and Past Master of the Builders Lodge, at Chi Rho, St. Luke’s and St. Thomas the Apostle churches, and at Red Pine Camp where he and Yvonne camped for over 45 years.

Lorne will be especially missed by the Fraser, Botham, Schultz and Oakes families. Special thanks to Claire, Joanne,Pat and Olaf and the caring team and friends on Ottawa 2 East for filling Lorne’s final journey with laughter and compassion.

Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 Mcleod Street (at O’Connor) on Friday, December 6, 2019 from 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. A Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Perley and Rideau Veterans Foundation or World Vision would be appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Perley Rideau Veterans at a later date.
