Louise Glatt, beloved wife for 66 years of Harvey Glatt, died peacefully at Ottawa General Hospital on Thursday, May 26, 2022. Louise was born on June 18, 1936 in Bronx, NY, to the late Lillian and William Jaffee. She was predeceased by her sister Barbara (Myron Olstein). She leaves her husband and her daughters Margot (Aidan) and Nancy and son Richard (Cheryl) and grandchildren Adrian, Jenna, Katie, and Morgan.
An accomplished pianist and music teacher, Louise was a graduate of the Manhattan School for the Performing Arts and Crane College of Music. She was the co-author of “What to Do Until the Music Teacher Comes” which awakened a love of music in many children.
Together, Louise and Harvey enriched the cultural life of Ottawa, beginning with Café Le Hibou, which hosted hundreds of musicians, poets and visual artists. They had Treble Clef Records and were the founders of CHEZ-FM radio. Over the years, they presented many prominent musicians to Ottawa audiences and were longstanding supporters of the musical offerings of the National Arts Centre and other venues.
With the perfect mix of charm and irreverence, literacy, laughter, music and great food personified her home.
Louise was an active volunteer, notably with special needs pupils at Connaught Public School. She quietly and generously helped many individuals and groups, always encouraging people to take advantage of opportunities in education.
Louise touched many lives as a relative and as a deeply caring friend in Canada and the United States.
A private graveside service will be held.
If you wish to make a donation in Louise’s memory, she was a supporter of the Ottawa Food Bank.
