Obituary for Marcella May Lyla Winship (Brown)

On Monday December 30, 2019, Marcella Winship, loving wife of David and mother of Michael, Anne and Heather, passed away peacefully in Magog, Quebec at the age of 84.

Daughter of Eileen and Dr. Stanley Brown, Marcella grew up in Granby, Quebec, with her two brothers Brian and David. Always engaged from an early age, she was Student Council President at her High School and Captain of her Championship basketball team. In 1956 she became a proud graduate of the Royal Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in Montreal, the same year that she married David Winship her childhood sweetheart. As youngsters they met at Orford Lake in the Eastern Townships, and became lifelong friends for 75 years, lovingly married for 63 of them. Marcella and David raised their three children in St. Lambert, Quebec and spent most summers at Orford Lake and also travelling to show their kids this country, from the farthest Eastern points of Newfoundland to the edge of Vancouver Island. She and David travelled the world extensively, but remained proud Canadians and wanted to share that with us. They succeeded.

Mom was involved in so many things, from volunteering at the Canadian Cancer Society for over 25 years, and being a Girl Guide Commissioner, to being Choir Director at the church, always an important part of their lives. She loved to sing, had a beautiful voice and was an accomplished pianist. Curious about life right up until the end, she was an amateur geologist, ornithologist, naturalist and archaeologist who she shared her enthusiasm of the natural world with her children. Not a walk or cross-country ski was taken without observing and identifying tracks in the snow, examining various droppings, or watching and naming birds in the trees, and stating which kind of tree it was!
A wonderful athlete, she excelled at whatever sport she put her mind to, from downhill skiing to golf, swimming, canoeing and tennis, she loved to be active. When she could no longer participate in those sports she became an
avid armchair fan. Marcella was someone who loved people and would engage in conversation with everyone she met! No one was a stranger to her for long, she would captivate with her open personality and wonderful sense of humour. She will be deeply missed by all of us, her children, her beloved lifelong partner David, her grandchildren, Keith, Bonnie and Angus, and little Owen her great-grandson that she happily held this summer for the first time at Orford Lake.

We would like to thank the Magog Hospital for their compassionate care of the last few days.

Friends are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Ave. (at Richmond Road), Ottawa on Friday, January 3, 2019 from 3 - 5 pm and 7 - 9 pm.
