Obituary for Michael Ho-Loke Teoh

Michael Ho-Loke Teoh
February 25, 1931 - January 18, 2022

Passed away peacefully under the care of the staff at The Ottawa Hospital on January 18, 2022. Michael, in his 91st year, beloved husband of the late Barbara Teoh nee Chan for 25 years. Loving father of Terence and Derek. Dear brother of the late Lena and her late husband Harry of Vancouver, Albert and his wife Deanna of Toronto, his younger sisters whom he both loved and tormented, Susie of Singapore, Diana of Hong Kong, and Irene and her husband Leger of Washington D.C. and Brother-in-law to Katherine and her late husband Oscar of Ottawa, the late Sunny of Ottawa, Clara of Ottawa, and Elizabeth and her late husband Robin of Mississauga. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Gordon, Suzanne, Kevin, Percy, Michael, Bess, Nick, Jenny, Tony, Libby, Philip, Chris and Evelyn. Born in Amoy, Fujian Province, China, Michael was the second son of a prosperous businessman J.P. Teoh. After years of a misspent youth, Michael pulled his socks up and distinguished himself at the Hong Kong University School of Architecture, later earning a masters degree at the University of Melbourne. He met and fell in love with Barbara with whom he worked at an architectural firm in Hong Kong. At first she found him arrogant and annoying but, in her words, hate turned to love. Later, seeking a better life for their family to come, Michael and Barbara emigrated to Canada in 1967, settling first in Toronto then moving to Ottawa, finding life in a smaller city more agreeable. This is where they built their life and raised their sons. Michael spent the most fruitful years of his professional career at the Campeau Corporation from the 1970s through to the dissolution of the company, where he was a well-loved colleague known for strong opinions and a wicked sense of humour. He has passed the years since retirement living in Ottawa in a house he designed. There will be no services held at this time. A special thanks to the Ottawa Hospital caregiving staff for the wonderful care given to Michael in his final days. Donations to Alzheimer Society of Canada gratefully accepted in lieu of flowers.
