Obituary for Nadene Marie Dowdell (Rodda)

Peacefully in her 90th year, on Saturday April 16, 2022 at her Ottawa residence.

Beloved mother of Debbie (deceased 2017), Karyn (the late Mark), Graham (Elaine) and Chris (Joanne). Missed by four grandchildren: Justin (Sarah), Travis (Kerry-Lee), Tasha (Tim) and Conor; and two great-grandchildren Charlie and Nora. Former wife of the late Robert Dowdell. Remembered by sister-in-law Agnes Dowdell, and six nephews.

Born in Windsor, Ontario on July 28, 1932, Nadene now rejoins family who predeceased her: parents Harry Attilio and Ida (nee Falasconi) Rodda who emigrated from Pesaro Italy in 1916 to Alberta where Harry worked in the coal mines and later for the CP railroad in Windsor; sister Lena and husband Harold Sparks; sister Nevina and husband Nilo Croppo; brother-in-law Bill Dowdell, niece Kimberly and nephews Aaron and Bob.

Nadene lived a long and eventful life which took her as a new bride to Montreal in 1952; to Ottawa in 1958 with three kids in tow; to Regina Saskatchewan in 1973; back to Ottawa in 1976; to country living in Greely in 1983; and on many travels to England, to Ireland (sharing a wee dram with Elaine's folks John and Bridget), to Europe where she found her family roots in Pesaro, and to warm winters in Florida. Along the way she played the consummate hostess to numerous friends, neighbours, fellow bridge players (including Joanne's mom Betty Lowe) and dad's government colleagues. She remained active at the Gloucester Seniors Centre and into her seventies huffed along with the ladies at Sue's aerobics in Greely. Fiercely independent, she lived on her own until recently; she loved her garden and was a daily crossword fanatic.

Visitation for Nadene will take place at Hulse Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street Ottawa on Friday June 3, 2022 at noon, followed by service in the chapel at 1 p.m.  For those who wish to participate virtually, the service will be LiveStreamed and can be accessed by using the link provided below.

The family thanks Nadene's long-time GP Dr. Karlene Smith for years of kind support, Dr. Ruth Farey and Oak Park Retirement Community staff. For those wishing, donations to the Greely Public Library, 1448 Meadow Drive, Greely, ON K4P 1B1, are appreciated.
