This kind hearted, deeply loved community builder passed peacefully on Friday, March 13th, 2020 at Bruyère Continuing Care in his 98th year. Beloved husband of Stella (Gandall) for 68 years. Loving father of Karen and loving Zaidie of Drew (Kera) and Seth Silverman. Predeceased by his parents Dora & Joseph Torontow, and siblings Sara Rubin, Faye Kapinsky (Nap), and Saul (Eva) Torontow. Beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews.
A lifelong entrepreneur in Ottawa who started his career at his family’s business, Torontow Hardware as a young man, he then began Thelen & Torontow Lighting, a staple in Ottawa for 40 years.
Norman served in the Canadian Airforce, proudly wore #13 in the Jewish Men’s Basketball League and was a beloved member of the Ottawa Kiwanis and Ottawa Sage Kiwanis. Throughout his life, Norman was dedicated to community service and supported many organizations in Ottawa including Bruyère, where he was instrumental in starting the Helpline for Seniors. It was fitting that his last days were spent in the care of Bruyère.
The family is grateful to the dedicated team at Bruyère, especially the Palliative Care Team whose dedication and compassion were immensely helpful during a difficult time. A funeral service will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa on Sunday, March 15th, at 2:00 pm. Interment at Jewish Memorial Gardens, 2692 Bank Street, Ottawa. Shiva will be held at 1510 Riverside Drive Ottawa, Monday -Thursday 11-8pm, Friday 11-3pm
