Obituary for Olga Luba Sametz (Doskoch)

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Olga Sametz. She died peacefully on December 11, 2019, in the presence of her family at the age of 88. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Orest Sametz. She is the sister of Josephine Bullock (deceased), Anne William, Marion Boyle, and May Kleerkoper. She is the mother of Peter (Ronda Rankin, Calgary) Joan (Chris Power, Edmonton), Rob (Ottawa) and Terry (Tracey, Ottawa) and the grandmother of Miranda, Zachary, Michael, Emma, Daniel, Sarah, Cairine and Veronica.

Olga was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and grew up on the family homestead near Honeymoon, Saskatchewan. She graduated from the Holy Family Hospital School of Nursing in Prince Albert in 1953 winning the gold medal in Psychiatry. She worked in hospitals in Vancouver and St. Catherines and for the Victorian Order of Nurses in downtown Toronto. She devoted her life to the raising of her 4 children. She warmly welcomed people into her home and delighted in serving delicious meals. She was an active member of her parish church and was President of the Ukrainian Women’s Association for 7 years in addition to representing the association on the Ottawa Council of Women. She embraced multiculturalism and worked hard to promote awareness of Ukrainian Canadian culture.

The family would like to thank the staff of the ICU at the Ottawa Civic for the wonderful care that they provided Olga during her last week of life. It was such a comfort to her family to witness the caring dignity and respect that she was shown during her final days.
