Obituary for Phyllis Elaine Eleazar

Phyllis Elaine Eleazar, born on 19 September 1947 in Corentyne, Guyana, passed away on 11 August 2023, in Ottawa, Canada.

Phyllis was the daughter of the late Randolph Joseph Sidney Eleazar and the late Mildred Park.  She leaves behind, Aunt Barbara Rockcliffe, Aunt Lorna Lampkin, and Kathleen Eleazar; sisters Doreen David and Dawn Eleazar-Fernandes, brothers Gordon and Christopher Eleazar, and Randy Reece, nephews and nieces Tristan, Shaina, Jayden and Ilyas Eleazar, Michelle and Monique David, Marcia Park, Julita Park-Pentision, and cousins, Eloise Park, Avril Robertson, Colin Clark, Annabelle (Pinkie) Cunningham-Clarke, Clarence, Rowan, Trevor, Jeffrey-Paul Abbensetts and Simone Gyechie, Michelle and Jennifer Rockcliffe, Adrian Myrill and many others.

Before immigrating to Canada, Phyllis attended St. Joseph’s High School and worked with the Canadian High Commission in Georgetown, Guyana. She became a truly International Civil Servant starting at the United Nations Center for Human Settlements (UNCHS) in Vancouver, British Columbia, and then worked with the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, serving missions in Somalia, Angola, Sierra Leone and Liberia. After her retirement Phyllis worked with Help Age Canada which also included a short stint in Haiti.

Phyllis was a decorated Toastmistress, receiving numerous awards for her oratory. She was a member of the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa and its prayer group and was also an integral member of the Guyana Association of Ottawa from 1987. She was a very generous and brave person, even unto death - donating her body to research at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine.

Phyllis will be dearly missed by us all. 

A Memorial Service for Phyllis, followed by a repast, will be held on Wednesday,  August 23,2023 at 12:00 noon at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, 30 Cleary Avenue, Ottawa.
