Obituary for Richard Melvin Deslaurier
20 May 1955 – 14 Feb 2020
Richard unexpectedly passed away in hospital on February 14th, 2020, at the age of 64 with his loved ones by his side. Richard’s battle with cancer was sudden and short-lived. Devoted husband to Laura Riggins. Son of Irene Deslaurier-Ball and the late Melvin Deslaurier. Brother to Elaine Lavictoire (André), Sharon Deslaurier, Allen Deslaurier (Angelita Guiriba). Uncle to David Lavictoire (Jennifer Doran), Sylvia Ferguson (Doug) and Michael Deslaurier. Great-Uncle to Katelyn & Chloe Lavictoire, and to Jemma, Kendra & Mya Ferguson.
Richard, known as Rick by his peers and co-workers, was always called Ricky by his parents & siblings. Throughout his life Rick had a varied career working as a telecommunication technician in his younger years, evolving into the computer network technical trade with his final job working for a local signage company.
Ricky was the go to person that everyone called upon when they needed help. No matter what he was doing or where he was, Ricky always made the time to help others. He will be remembered for his easy going personality. He could have been the poster boy for the expression “you can’t judge a book by its cover”, looked tough as nails on the outside, with the softest interior. Ricky never asked for anything. He will be so missed.
Grateful thanks to the staff of the Ottawa General Hospital ICU Teams for their many efforts to save him and for their excellent and compassionate care.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Richard’s honour at a later date yet to be determined.
