Obituary for Ross Wilson Caldwell

On Saturday, March 28, 2020, Ross Wilson Caldwell passed away peacefully at age of 97 at the Ottawa General Hospital.

Ross was born on June 24, 1922 in Lawson, Saskatchewan. On March 8, 1943, he married Evelyn Freeze. They raised a daughter, Sandra, and a son, James. He was a radar technician in the RCAF during World War II and remained in the Air Force for nearly 25 years, retiring in 1967. Afterward, he continued in the service of his country, working at the Dept of National Defence until 1987. Ross and Evelyn were married for 70 years. They lived in almost every province and made many lifelong friends in and out of the service. They never failed to return home each year to family in Sussex, NB. Their door was always open and you were always welcome.

Ross enjoyed telling stories of his days in the service. He was a patriotic Canadian and was proud to serve his country. After retirement, he dove into tracing the family tree of his wife Evelyn, and corresponded with relatives from around the world. This culminated in publishing the book of genealogy entitled “William Freeze and His Descendants”. Ross had a genuine appreciation for the history of his family and his country. He was known for his calm, good humoured nature.

Ross was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn. He is survived by his daughter and son, Sandra and James (Kathy), and his three Grandsons, Troy, Trevor (Cheryl) and James. Also loved by his seven great grandchildren: Megan (predeceased), Lauren, Jacob, Melissa, Joshua, Bethany and Matthias. Dear friends of Keith and Geri Critch and Andre and Sharon Beaudin, and loved by his extended family. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, when the current COVID-19 crisis has passed.

Many thanks to the wonderful care of the staff at the Perley Rideau Veterans Staff over the past 5 years.
