Obituary for Ruth Viner (Macy)

Peacefully on Sunday June 14, in the middle of her 90 th year of life.
Predeceased in 2014 by Joseph, her loving husband of 63 years, she leaves
behind a large and loving family which was the centre of her life; including
her four children, Gary (Debra), Robert (Jennifer Freeman), Norman (Margo)
and Susan (Gillie Vered) and ten grandchildren, Alisa (Jeff Wheeldon), Sara
(Daniel Spence), Lauren (Bryan Fishbein), Jason, Lenny, Amelia, Joshua
(Andrea Ross), Isaac, Noah, and Elie, and five great grandchildren, Arielle,
Jonah, Ezra, Seth and Ethan. She was also predeceased by her parents, Samuel
and Freda Macy and brother Murray (Mary) and sister Sandra (Jacie Levinson)
and is remembered by her sister Shirley (Mike Molot).
Ruth attended Carleton University and was studying journalism when
romance with Joseph Viner interrupted her life and she moved on to the
important task of building a big and busy family. Ruth was an important force
behind her husband entering and soaring in the real estate business,
expanding on the tradition initially started by Ruth’s father, Sam Macy.
Likewise, she expended extraordinary energy on keeping her children on the
straight and narrow, not always an easy task. She was a major factor in
instilling confidence and ambition in her children and reveled in the
successful completion of their university degrees and the progression of their
careers.
Ruth was exceptionally energetic, sociable and determined. In her youth, she
was a champion bowler. She enjoyed tennis, golf, bridge, travel and wintering
in Florida. She treasured her friendships, entertaining and had a positive
outlook on life all while enduring many significant health challenges. She was
a devoted and significant supporter of the Ottawa Jewish Community andwill
be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
With Joe, she established the Ruth and Joseph Viner Endowment Fund of the
Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation (www.ojcf.ca) and the family would
prefer donations to that fund or to one of your choice in lieu of flowers.
Funeral will be the week of June 15 and will be limited due to COVID-19
restrictions.PrivateShiva.
With heartfelt thanks to her compassionate caregivers and Amica Retirement
residence in Westboro.
