Obituary for Sandra Pollock (Goldman)

Sandra Goldman Pollock
(née Shapiro)
It is with great sadness that we announce Sandra’s passing, peacefully at Maimonides Geriatric Centre on Thursday, June 18, 2020. Cherished wife of the late Dr. Piney Pollock. Adored daughter of the late Harry and the late Lottie Shapiro. Beloved mother of Cheryl Goldman of Montreal, Mitchell Goldman (Aileen Berger), and Jill Goldman, both of California. Devoted and proud grandma of Hailey Laxer and fiancé Ryan Turk. Sister of the late Elaine Ackerman. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Sandy was a proud New Yorker to her last years, having never lost her accent despite being in Canada for over 60 years. Always sophisticated, she brought her unique flair and love of culture to everything she did. A modern and ambitious woman for her time, Sandy pursued a career in education, getting her teaching degree from Hunter College in New York and later a Master’s. As a dedicated teacher of special education, Sandy was adored by all her students, having made an impact in all the lives she touched. With a lifelong passion for learning, teaching, and bringing people together, Sandy sought to enrich the lives of her students, her friends, and her family. Sandy always knew how to make an impression and loved to entertain, so much so that when she entered a room, her poise, elegance, and warmth was felt by all. She had a love for traveling and cooking, her kitchen always smelling delicious, never passing up the opportunity to cook or enjoy an incredible meal surrounded by loved ones with a glass of red wine or a Bloody Ceasar in hand. From New York to Montreal to Ottawa, Sandy lived out her remaining years in Montreal to be closer to her daughter Cheryl. At the end her life, her disease robbed her of her joie de vivre and feistiness, but she always maintained her dignity and ability to love and smile. She was a strong, determined, bright woman and teacher, passionate in her beliefs and will be sadly missed by her many friends, family, former students, and all who knew her, leaving a deep void in our hearts. A special thank you to Sandy’s dedicated caregivers Hirut, Grace, Lanie, Pinky, Jennifer, Anna, and Marietta, and to the staff at Maimonides Geriatric Centre, David, Abir, Catherine, and Pamela. A private graveside service will be held at the Jewish Memorial Gardens- Osgoode Cemetery in Ottawa. Donations may be made in her honour to support the cause most dear to her heart,
